Eternally increasing
competition in automotive industry demands productivity improvements and unit
cost reduction. Historically sheet metal stamping has been used extensively to
produce automotive body panels. Sheet metal stamping process is one of the most
popular for manufacturing automobiles today. In automotive industry, the
production managers and manufacturing engineers of car body panels follows a
metal stamping process. Metal Stamping process involves various methods of
operations such as cutting, coining, bending, punching, flanging and embossing
to create a metal die into moulded designs and shapes.
An automotive plant
produces 40-50 critical panels per model of a car, which requires some 100-150
dies. But the production of panels differs based on the industrial needs. The
stamping plant on the automotive manufactures includes three types of panels
such as External skin panels, Internal mating panels, and dimensionally critical
inner panels. In today’s world, Sheet Metal Stamping has further expanded the way
in addition of lasers and robotics to the automotive manufacturing process.
